Haute Couture two piece by Toepie

Another exciting season of Guyane Fashion Week has wrapped up, and I’m extremely proud of the organization, designers and the models.

I was invited by the Guyane Fashion Week organization. It was definitely a different experience since it was my first Fashion Week as a fashion blogger. And WOW, what a whirlwind it was. I went in with the intention of meeting new people and hopefully having some networking opportunities. I was there from Tuesday afternoon to Monday morning, so it was a quick trip but felt like a game changer. I know I want to share lots about Guyane Fashion Week with you guys but I want to make sure I do it organized and also make it informative so that you aren’t just reading a “fluff” piece.

I started off my Wednesday evening at The Central Market of Cayenne. It was very enlightening the theme for the first night showcase was Madras. It became a competitive evening; involving fourteen students of the Melkior High School competing against each other with their three most creative items of clothing. There were a wide variety of items of clothing from sporty to casual, classy and evening wears, each with madras incorporated.

But the more madras and creativity there was in a piece of clothing, the more chance that student had of winning the title of "Best Student". Carine Djoe won this competition round and received the title "Kamisa D’Argent".

On the evening there was also a competition between the "experienced" fashion designers. Those designers presented collections full of rich colors and vibrant inspiration.

The most creative clothing was from Kreyol Shyn. She received the title "Kamisa d’or". She showed a colorful collection with an orange nuance. Her dresses were very well finished and despite the dresses that looked simple, there were details that you had to admire up close. The dresses were decorated with a row of golden pins with chains hanging on them.

On Thursday I went to a networking event. I met Mossi Traore and I had the opportunity to have a conversation with him. He spoke about his journey in the fashion world and where he sees Fashion Week heading. We also spoke about “our love” for Bollywood movies. The major lessons I took out of the interview are to work hard, never give up and go for your dreams!

And finally the most important show we’ve been waiting on for was held at the Kourou Space Center, with the theme "Haute Couture". At this outdoor event

LED lighting formed the catwalk. The models "emerged" from the rear of the spacecraft to show the creations of the different designers. I was lucky enough to have a front row seat. It was an experience in itself to enjoy the fresh ideas of designers from Suriname, French Guiana, France, Brazil, Guyana, and Martinique and Haiti. All visitors were given a white vest and hairnet for safety reasons. The white spaceship in the background and the white light from the catwalk formed a beautiful coherence.

The night started with Kreyol Shyn, the winner of Kamisa d’or, with orange nuances and some daring dresses.

Jocelyn Julieno really went on the extreme tour. He has made garments from recycled material. Wrapped in rubber tops bathroom mats and garments made of metal.

Edvan Lacerda from Brazil made the audience live their fairy-tale through his collection.

The Guyanese Kramronuj collection consisted of extravagant black suede dresses, finished with organza and golden details.

”The name of his collection was ‘HereComes the Motherf * Bride ’. He chose black instead of white, because he believes that everyone should feel comfortable in every wedding dress.

Zacometi from Paris also presented his latest collection Zac Hibiscus of men's suits with bold prints. Although it was about extreme colors and figures, the clothing was very classy.

Designer Danitza is the daring queen when it comes to fashion.

The evening ended with Tarquin Benel, his theme was "Paris Coming to the Guyane Forest. He showed a collection of fresh clothing to emphasize green nature.

On Saturday The Grand Defile Final, the last day of the fashion week was held at the university in Cayenne. The university was transformed into a great catwalk. And on both sides the audience could sit and enjoy the show. The same designers from Friday showed their collection again, and also some of them who participated Wednesday evening, whose designs I also enjoyed immensely, designers like Mamzelles Sampson, Jeffery, JMF Creation and Adeliska Victoire.

Kramronuj has shown a very different collection. This collection had more blue and red in it.

In one sentence, these trends are here to stay!

RECAP OF MY THOUGHTS

It was so nice to connect with the designers, some of the models and the Guyane Fashion Week team. I’m so proud of those Surinamese models; Fabian Djakie, Daphne Kruydenhof, Micha Willems and Akash Rasal, who slayed the catwalk.

This year only four Surinamese models participated at the Guyane Fashion Week catwalk.

Designer Meredith Joeroeja had the honor to participate also, this was her second time at the Guyane Fashion Week.

The Experience: No explanation needed!

The way I view blogging and this field will never be the same. It’s almost as if my mind is exploding with a million ideas.

I really enjoyed my #GFW! I’ve learned a lot and know to prepare myself more in advance for the next one.

XOXO
